Long March to Fizzle Out?

Friday 14 August 2009

The Pakistani blogosphere is abuzz with what is alleged to be imminent political change in this usually stagnant nation. GEO TV has been banned in some cities, and now reports are coming in of Shireen Rehman’s supposed resignation.

What is most probable, however, is that its much ado about nothing. In Pakistan, its always business as usual. Our readers have chimed in with their views on the issue. Shireen Abbasi says from Lahore “Nawaz Sharif isn’t exactly the most desirable of leaders, and the poor, lethargic and apathetic population of Pakistan can’t be asked to put their lives and properties on the line for just another selfish politician.”

Ayesha Chaudhary, a BBA student from Islamabad writes “This pathetic circus of a Long March is really about political opportunism and nothing more. Nawaz Sharif doesn’t really give a damn about the judiciary or instituational integrity”.

Meanwhile Female lawyers led by Samina Nauman protested the government’s decisions against the Long March. Police restrained Samina in Karachi, an event that has certainly ruffled a lot of feathers.
