For the first time since the birth of the country, Pakistan is seeing beauty contests. A Muslim majority country, it has previously seen fundamentalist governments such as that of Zia ul Haq which repressed the culture of Pakistan. However, under the government of Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan has experienced a sociocultural revolution. Women are making unprecedented forays into the cultural realm, and this has culminated in the first beauty pagaents featuring Pakistani girls around the world.

Mariyah Moteen was arguably the first Pakistani girl representing Pakistan in the Miss Bikini competition in 2006. The third runner up in the Miss Pakistan World 2006 pageant, Mariyah has already competed in the Miss Tourism Queen International 2006 pageant that was held in China. She was also the third runner up in the Miss Pakistan World contest. Third running seems to be easy for her though.

It is no secret that Pakistan has some of the most beautiful women in the world. This has often been attributed by anthropologists to the fact that the country is a melting pot of different races and cultures including Indian, Aryan, Afghan, Persian, Arab, and even African along the southwestern coast. The resultant gene pool has created some of the most beautiful women known to mankind.

Many people acknowledge this fact. Pakistani women can generally appear similar to Indian or Middle Eastern women. They wear the traditional shalwar kameez, which is a tunic and a loose trouser. Of late, fashion designers have created new modifications to the traditional design, resulting in whole new looks for the Pakistani woman.

This is certainly a first in the history of beauty pageants, because there has never been a miss Pakistan in history. Her title is Miss Bikini Pakistan 2006 and Mariyah will be joining the rest of the world. As times have changed dramatically for Pakistan in the past three or four years years, women have become more prominent in the entertainment realm.

Pakistan has seen a relatively liberal phase under the government of Pervez Musharraf, which has led to a relaxation of the strict cultural norms previously in place.
